2 Week Design Sprint

Brief:

This case study documents the process involved in the design of an alternative way to test one's luck by reintroducing gambling in a more simple and fun way.

Story

It was Sunday lunch with my friends and I had no idea what I was going to design for the next two weeks. As I pondered I began to look around and noticed that a couple of them were talking about their teams and stats. Pretty ordinary Sunday, But because the EURO CUP is around the corner I pay a bit more attention to the games and the topics of discussion. I can be quite an instigator, so I tend to lean towards the underdog just to get under their skin. Pretty entertaining I must say, but in the mix of this; one of them shouts “I bet you CR7 is gonna bring the cup home again?” and bam! my mind grabbed the baton and ran! Immediately I remembered how NJ just legalized gambling, advertisements for casinos and sport betting can be seen in my town near public transportation, we have the Las Vegas of the east coast; Atlantic City, and do to all the infographics I created for my previous employer I remembered a small fact about how Macau just gained its independence from Portugal in 1999 and its called the Las Vegas of Asia. At that moment I knew the market I wanted to tap into and the audience to focus on. Now I needed to do a little market and design research for inspiration.

Research Summary

Competitor Designs:

Market:

AGA research shows that the vast majority of nearly 90% of Americans view gaming as an acceptable form of entertainment, and just over one-third of Americans—35%—say they visited a casino the past year. Beyond the entertainment value, Americans have embraced the positive local economic impact of the industry. 60% say that casinos help their local economies. As we expect more state governments and lotteries to begin the process of authorizing legal sports betting nevertheless the industry contributes around $135bil to the US economy annually. But between Live and Online gameplay the segment that seems to have the fastest growth is the latter. This market is expected to reach 60 billion in 2020. That's an estimated growth of $20bil in just 5 years. Since all of these gambling apps require the user to sync their bank accounts to the app it led me towards researching a little on money transferring app. Most senders and receivers attach an emotional quotient to the transfer of funds. Unlike payments, where the money is exchanged for a service or product, remittances are usually personal and emotional transactions. this is seen in the Ui of Venmo. Where they prompt the user to enter a message before sending funds. With the proliferation of mobile wallet apps in recent years, businesses and individuals alike are adapting to this new form of payment processing. Ever since NFC blew up in the early 2000s These contactless payments are on the rise and expected to generate close to 190 billion U.S. dollars by 2021 with the number of proximity transfers projected to reach over 60 million by 2020.

Although these sector growths sound promising; privacy concerns remain a major barrier when paying with a mobile device. In a 2018 survey, 59% of respondents in the U.S. were worried about their personal information when using mobile payments. According to a 2019 survey, 29% of Americans would like to pay with their smartphones all the time. While another survey states that 65% are reluctant to try mobile transactions. it seems that absolute security, convenience, and instant transaction are the incentives needed for American users to adapt to mobile payment technologies faster.

With this research at hand, I began looking into the top betting and payment transfer apps dominating the industry. Currently, the top application in no particular order is Draft King, Fan Duel, Money line, and Barstool Bets with several casino gaming apps trailing. The top payment transfer apps are Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, and Paypal with bank-specific apps following. After a week of brainstorming and researching online gambling, proximity payment trends, my audience, surveys and exploring these app designs I concluding with these 5 pain points and solutions.

Pain Points & Solutions

Pain Points:

  1. Problem: Sports apps feel like beautified scorecards while casino games still carry on the skeuomorphic graphic interface that was highly popular in the early iPhone years.

  2. Problem: Knowledge of sports stats seems to be necessary to truly enjoy sports betting while on gaming apps playing against a computer at times can give players the notion the odds are against them.

  3. Problem: Betting apps are either used for monetary gain or compulsive gameplay.

  4. Problem: Apart from advertisements all gambling apps have this visual tension across their design. Sports apps need to display not only team and player stats but a point system, scores, time, and updates. in gaming, the skeuomorphic interfaces fills the screen with a rainbow of colors, bulky graphics, and pointless achievements.

  5. Problem: Currently there is no true communal integration into any betting app other than fantasy football.

Solutions:

  1. Solution: Reduce context details and apply a more clear and fun aesthetic that marries both interaction and simplicity.

  2. Solution: Remove the necessity for stats and focus more on the betting. completely remove the presence of computer gameplay.

  3. Solution: By designing a tool rather then an application users will think of the product as a solution not as a form of entertainment

  4. Solution: Keep information to a minimum, remove the visual reminiscence of a casino and introduce more user interaction to entice gameplay.

  5. Solution: Introduce a more localized approach to betting.

Future Scope:

  1. video feature that detects motion and applies a celebratory filter to the body e.g: Confetti, Balloons, Fire

  2. adaptive design for wearable device betting e.g: Coin Toss, Quick Bet, High Jump, Racing
